A History
Photography and fashion are two mediums that go hand in hand together. Photography has not only been used for cataloguing clothes and products, but also as a way of influencing the attitudes and considering what is en vogue (in fashion but fancier). Early uses of the medium in fashion were simple static photographs of an outfit, maybe at a few angles and views, but for the most part objective. One of the major pioneers of what can be considered modern fashion photography is Edward Steichen, who was "dared" to try and promote fashion as a fine art, through the use of photography. Steichen then took photos of gowns designed by Paul Poiret (a well known designer of the time) , which were subsequently published in the April 1911 issue of the magazine Art et Décoration. These photographs are widely considered to be the first ever 'modern' fashion photography shoot.
Fashion videoThe task given to the class was to create a 30-60 second video with the main theme of fashion, but the freedom to choose how to interpret this. For my video I chose to try and convey the strain of trying to stay 'fashionable' or keep up with with certain standards on mental health, using a mixture of clips of a rose and people, in a montage style to help try and convey that idea.
For the audio I recorded clips of the noise in densely packed areas, full of noise. This was to create a sense of discord between the audio and the video, to convey the "hidden" or ignored nature of mental health. |
